What happened

Approximately 40 employees from the company Sunsalat gathered on Thursday afternoon for a meeting at ABF's premises in Åstorp. Representatives from the trade union Livsmedelsarbetareförbundet, the police, and interpreters were present. An employee told Helsingborgs Dagblad that the staff had received neither information about wages nor whether operations will reopen. During the meeting, the union could not provide answers on what will happen going forward.

Our analysis

The trade union Livsmedelsarbetareförbundet and the police met with the staff, but left 40 employees without answers regarding their wages and livelihood. When interpreters are called in to a meeting with the police, it involves a vulnerable group of workers who risk being left completely without a safety net. However, the reporting lacks answers from Sunsalat's management, and no one explains why the police needed to attend a union information meeting. Nor is it clear who will pay the unpaid wages if the factory remains closed. The next step must be for the union and relevant authorities to clarify whether the state wage guarantee applies to the affected workers.

Explained

The state wage guarantee is a protection that ensures the state pays wages to employees if an employer goes bankrupt.
