What has happened
The red-green administration in the City of Stockholm has decided to invest 41 million kronor into introducing work shoes within elderly care, preschools, and social services. Recently, staff at a group home in Hässelby gård got to try out their shoes. The Social Democrats emphasize that work shoes have never been a given in female-dominated professions and warn that the initiative will be revoked if the Moderate Party wins the 2026 election. The Moderates have opposed the investment, arguing that the money should instead go to staff, skills development, language support, and better food for the elderly.
Our analysis
Every day, the welfare system is carried by those who walk, lift, and stand throughout entire work shifts, and many new Swedes work in these sectors. Having the employer provide proper shoes is taken for granted in many male-dominated professions, but in welfare, it immediately becomes a political battle. When the opposition pits the staff's feet against language support and food for the elderly, a fundamental work environment issue is reduced to a budget item that can apparently be cut.
