What happened

Centerpartiet stands firm on its red line against Sverigedemokraterna. This is stated by party representative Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist, who has repeated the message several times during the week. According to SVT's domestic political commentator Mats Knutson, there are three reasons why resistance to Sverigedemokraterna is so strong within the party.

Our analysis

In Swedish political journalism, opposition to an anti-immigration party is often described as a strategic problem. Commentators analyze why a party says no, as if it were a riddle or a tactical deadlock. The question should be asked the other way around: why are special reasons required to refuse cooperation with a party whose policies make distinctions between different people?

For new Swedes, this stance is not about party tactics. It is about everyday security, about the right to citizenship, and about not being singled out as a threat to society. When opposition to racism is reduced to a political game, the price paid by those actually affected by the policies is forgotten.

It is not Centerpartiet's distancing that should have to be explained in TV studios. It is the normalization of a party with roots in extremism that should be questioned every day.

Explained

A red line is a political term for a boundary that a party refuses to cross, such as not negotiating or cooperating with a particular party.
