What happened
Malmö's new municipal commissioner Halimo Nuur Bashir Abdi (V) has shared conspiracy theories on social media, reports Expressen. The posts on Instagram claimed, among other things, that a secret elite rules the world and included video clips featuring Libya's former dictator Muammar Gaddafi. In Malmö's new governing administration, Abdi has been assigned responsibility for human rights and the municipality's work against antisemitism and discrimination. Judiska församlingen i Malmö and Judiska Centralrådet have sharply criticized the shares, expressing grave concern about her suitability. Abdi declined an interview but stated in a written comment that she had not vetted the posts carefully enough and that she has now deleted them.
Our analysis
The fight against racism tolerates no double standards. Anyone who takes on the mission to protect minorities and combat antisemitism cannot simultaneously spread crude online myths. Conspiracy theories about hidden forces ruling the world are historically deeply intertwined with antisemitism, regardless of who shares them.
Ultimately, this affects all new Swedes. When politicians on the left are careless with extreme ideas, it provides direct ammunition to forces seeking to cast doubt on all anti-racist work. Defending human rights requires complete credibility. Those who turn a blind eye to prejudices within their own ranks forfeit the right to demand accountability from others.
Citing a lack of scrutiny is not good enough for one of Malmö's highest-ranking leaders. Antisemitism and conspiracy theories must always be confronted with uncompromising clarity, regardless of where they originate.
