Internal row in SD over Swedishness – former MP demands Jomshof's resignation

Nima Gholam Ali Pour leaves the Riksdag and launches a fierce attack against the party's view on who counts as Swedish.

What happened

Former Member of Parliament Nima Gholam Ali Pour directs sharp criticism at the leadership of the Sweden Democrats in an interview with Dagens ETC. After four years, he was forced to leave the Riksdag following the party's weak election results. The background to the conflict is an internal battle over whether Swedishness is determined by biology or culture. Gholam Ali Pour now demands that the party purge Member of Parliament Richard Jomshof and cut ties with the media channel Riks. According to him, the party cannot gain public trust as long as the leadership refuses to distance itself from exclusionary stances.

Our analysis

It took a lost seat in the Riksdag for one of the Sweden Democrats' most high-profile new Swedes to draw the same conclusion that millions of others had already understood. You can endorse every political initiative and defend every crackdown. In the end, it still boils down to the same old question: who actually counts as truly Swedish?

The debate within the anti-immigration party is not about philosophy. It is about the party's very core. The rhetoric of open Swedishness has always served as a convenient facade toward old Swedes and the media, while the more radical base has constantly been fed the opposite. When poll numbers decline, the facade cracks immediately.

Now the party's own representatives are confronted with a reality that affects new Swedes every day. No amount of assimilation in the world is enough for those who have built their entire power on singling out others as alien.

Explained

The channel Riks is a digital media channel with strong ties to the Sweden Democrats, founded to shape public opinion and spread the party's message.
