What happened

Migrationsverket is forced to pay damages to a small real estate company in Landskrona. The agency rented three apartments in the city starting in 2015 to use as accommodation for asylum seekers. The tenancy agreement was terminated ten years later, on 1 January 2025. When the agreement expired, the apartments were in such poor condition that they required a complete renovation. The property owner subsequently sued Migrationsverket for the damages and has now been awarded compensation in the millions.

Our analysis

Migrationsverket bears full responsibility for the apartments the agency signs agreements for. Over a ten-year period, from 2015 to 2025, the contract covered three apartments that were left without adequate maintenance. The mainstream reporting does not mention how many people lived in the apartments during that decade or what wear and tear is reasonable over such a long period of time. Nor does the reporting question why the agency did not carry out regular inspections during the rental period. The damages, amounting to millions, are now being paid with public funds due to deficient management. The agency has not yet stated whether the incident will lead to changed routines for future lease agreements.

Explained

Damages are financial compensation that an individual or public authority must pay to make amends for damage or harm that has been caused.
