What happened

On August 1, a national mobile phone ban was introduced in Swedish compulsory schools. From August 1, 2026, the rule will be tightened so that students' phones must be collected at the start of the school day in compulsory school forms and at leisure-time centers. At Mälarhöjdens skola in Stockholm, a local mobile phone ban has already been in place for two years following a decision by principal Micael Pettersson. School management and teachers state that the ban has resulted in better study peace and more social interaction during breaks, but that the collection simultaneously entails extra work for the school staff.

Our analysis

The Riksdag has passed the mobile phone ban in the Education Act, but leaves the practical implementation and responsibility to teachers and principals out in the schools. At Mälarhöjdens skola, a teacher may need to spend ten minutes at the beginning of a lesson solely on collecting and locking away phones, which takes time directly from instruction. The reporting highlights a well-functioning process at a school in Stockholm with committed parents, but fails to raise the question of how schools with lower staffing levels and tougher work environments are supposed to find the time for the same control. Furthermore, students' own voices are missing regarding how the ban actually affects their school day. On August 1, 2026, phones are to be collected already in the morning, but lawmakers have not yet provided answers on how schools should handle students who refuse to hand over their mobile phones.

Explained

A national mobile phone ban means that the Education Act regulates that mobile phones, as a general rule, may not be used during lesson time without a specific decision or exception.
