What happened

The deportation of siblings Najib and Aliya was scheduled to take place yesterday from Arlanda airport. The siblings were born in Somalia but grew up in Sweden together with their mother. Once inside the airplane, protests and turmoil broke out among fellow passengers, according to Leo Ahmed from Nätverket för ungdomar. The incident led to the deportation being stopped.

Our analysis

When young new Swedes who grew up here are to be sent to a country they barely know, bureaucracy often turns a blind eye to reality. That fellow passengers choose to speak out on the spot shows strong moral courage. It should not take ordinary airline passengers digging their heels in for the system to pause the deportation of young people from the only home they know.

Explained

A deportation means that a person who lacks permission to stay in Sweden is forced to leave the country following a formal decision by the authorities.
