What happened

The regional council in Region Norrbotten has rejected a motion to establish more menopause clinics at the region's health centres. Today, the county has only one such clinic, located in Överkalix. The proposal was submitted by the opposition after Socialstyrelsen developed national guidelines for more equal menopause care in the country. Regional Commissioner Camilla Friberg (S) justifies the rejection by stating that the region wants to broaden knowledge across all primary care instead of investing in individual clinics.

Our analysis

When the regional leadership claims that general knowledge at the health centre should replace specialist clinics, it is a well-known way to save money on women's health. For new Swedish women, the decision hits twice as hard. Getting the right diagnosis for hormonal issues in an already overburdened primary care system often requires patients to advocate for their own case and argue in flawless Swedish.

The result is that women who support Norrbotten's elderly care and healthcare are misdiagnosed with burnout or mental illness when they actually need hormone treatment. Instead of providing women with specialist care that keeps them healthy and in the workforce, politicians choose to administer healthcare queues. That is not equal care; it is a political betrayal of those who uphold the welfare system.

Explained

Menopause care includes medical assistance, counseling, and hormone therapy for the physical and psychological symptoms that arise when the body's hormonal balance changes during and after the fertile age.
