What happened

The Truth Commission for the Sami People demands that the Swedish state issue an official apology for abuses against the indigenous people. The commission was appointed in 2022 and has collected facts and accounts from 300 people regarding forced relocations, torture, discrimination, and children punished for speaking Sami. SVT has asked the parliamentary parties about the demand, and the Sweden Democrats' spokesperson Martin Kinnunen announces that the party completely rejects an apology. The Left Party and the Green Party support the commission's demand, while other parties hesitate or set conditions. At the same time, the Moderates, the Christian Democrats, and the Sweden Democrats want to strip reindeer husbandry of its status as a national interest to facilitate mining.

Our analysis

Martin Kinnunen and the Sweden Democrats dismiss five years of investigative work and the testimonies of 300 Sami people regarding abuses with a simple no. Mainstream reporting often stops at the question of the exact words of an apology, but misses the ongoing conflict over land and power: the Moderates, the Christian Democrats, and the Sweden Democrats actively want to weaken the protection of reindeer husbandry against exploitation. When a state refuses to apologize for historical forced relocations, it is linked to the desire to continue encroaching on the same land today. The issue now lands directly on the government's desk, which must choose whether the commission's legislative proposals and demands for redress should be implemented or voted down in the Riksdag.

Explained

The Truth Commission for the Sami People is a state inquiry tasked with mapping historical and ongoing abuses against the Sami and proposing measures for reconciliation and rights.
