What happened

The trade union Byggnads sounds the alarm about widespread cheating in the construction industry. The union states that they are drowning in cases concerning foreign members' wages. The workload is now so high that Byggnads does not have time to mediate in the cases.

Our analysis

When cheating on construction sites is reported in established media, foreign labor is often portrayed as a vague problem for the Swedish model. The truth is quite different. New workers toil on the scaffolding while rogue employers steal their wages and pocket the difference.

This is not about administrative mistakes. It is about a deliberate business model where companies exploit people with a weaker foothold in the labor market. When the union does not have time to intervene, an A-team and a B-team are created in Swedish workplaces.

The question we must ask is simple: why are breaches of collective agreements and labor law allowed to remain a profitable strategy in Sweden? It is not the exploited workers who should bear the blame, but the employers and clients who make money from the cheating.

Explained

Mediation means that the union and the employer negotiate with each other to resolve a conflict concerning wages or working conditions before the case goes to court.
