What happened

Turkey has placed author and journalist Kurdo Baksi on a list of Swedes whom the country considers to be terrorists and wants arrested. Journalist Joakim Medin is also on the list. The Swedish government has been aware of this for several years, but has not informed Baksi. According to Baksi himself, he faces twelve years in prison.

Our analysis

The government has known about the threat for several years but refrained from warning Baksi, despite him facing twelve years in prison. The decision not to sound the alarm demonstrates how the protection of individual citizens and free opinion-makers risks being quietly sacrificed. Reporting has focused on the list itself, but has omitted the question of who in the Government Offices actually decided to keep Baksi in the dark. Answers are now demanded from the government regarding the motives behind the silence and whether there are more Swedes wanted abroad without having been warned.

Explained

Being on another country's wanted list means that a person risks being detained and extradited when traveling abroad.
