Dagens Nysvenskarna starts today. We are a newspaper for the almost three million people in this country who are new Swedes, and for every old Swede who wants to understand the country they actually live in.
Why now
Every morning, around three million new Swedes wake up and help keep this country running. They open the care home, staff the dental clinic and treat patients in the emergency ward. Yet in too much of Sweden's public debate they appear only as a problem, a cost or a threat.
Daily racism has become so normal that many old Swedes no longer notice it, and many new Swedes have stopped reporting it. We exist to break that silence.
What we will do
Every day we gather the news on migration, racism and extremism that matters to the lives of new Swedes. We summarise what happened, and we write a critical analysis of what it means – written by people with lived experience. We always name the newsroom that reported it first and link to the original.
We name racism when we see it, whether it comes from the street, the newsroom or parliament. We count what new Swedes contribute, not just what they cost. And we speak to old Swedes as well, because a country is built by everyone who carries it.
In more languages
The paper is written in Swedish and English, and step by step it will be readable in more of the languages spoken in Swedish kitchens and stairwells. News about your own life should not require you to learn bureaucratic Swedish first.
We are not guests. We are Sweden.
