Report shows election pressure in suburbs – but the picture is bigger

What happened

A new survey from Järvaveckan Research and Indikator Opinion shows that nine percent of residents in areas classified by the police as vulnerable have faced pressure to vote for a specific party or a specific candidate. In the rest of Sweden, the corresponding figure is four percent. Just over one in four residents in these areas feels that it is not accepted in the residential area to vote differently from family and friends, compared to fifteen percent in the rest of the country. At the same time, a clear majority in both groups states that it is completely or partially accepted to vote differently. The response rate in the survey was 15 percent in vulnerable areas and 49 percent in the rest of Sweden.

Our analysis

Expect this report to quickly be used by politicians who want to question democracy in Sweden's suburbs. The debate rarely tends to be about how the secrecy of the ballot should be protected in practice. Instead, figures like these often turn into a convenient cudgel against new Swedes.

What the report actually shows is that an overwhelming majority, even in areas with major socioeconomic challenges, stands up for the right to vote freely. That a minority is pressured is a serious democratic problem. But the question no one in the mainstream debate asks is why established parties only visit the suburbs two weeks before an election, only to leave a democratic void in their wake.

When politicians cut back on citizen offices, local associations, and meeting places, public discourse is also weakened. Democracy is not weakened because people live in a certain postal code. It is weakened when those in power turn their backs on them.

Explained

Vulnerable areas is the police's designation for geographical areas with low socioeconomic status and where criminals have an impact on the local community.
