What happened
Municipal adult education centers in Stockholm report a sharply increased demand for examinations in SFI. It is primarily course D, the final level within SFI, that is requested by individuals seeking to demonstrate their language skills. The background is that a passing grade in SFI course D is accepted to meet the new language requirements for Swedish citizenship. This applies while awaiting the official language test for citizenship, which has been delayed until the year 2030. However, schools warn applicants that the tests are difficult and do not constitute an easy solution.
Our analysis
For years, politicians have argued that new Swedes lack the will to learn the language. The rush to examinations in Stockholm demonstrates the exact opposite. People want to do things right, get their skills documented on paper, and become a full-fledged part of Sweden.
The real fiasco lies with the authorities themselves. First, they introduce strict new requirements for citizenship. Then, they fail to deliver the promised language test until the year 2030. New Swedes are now forced to navigate a bureaucratic patchwork while schools sound the alarm over overload.
In fact, the willingness to study is already high. According to SCB, just over half, 56 percent, of foreign-born individuals have a passing grade from some form of education in the Swedish language. The fact that the system is clogging up is not about reluctance among new Swedes, but about political inability to plan.
Explained
An examination means that you take tests covering an entire course independently to receive a grade, without participating in regular classes.
